Lewis & Clark Western Trail Reconnaissance-July 8-12, 2000

After about half and hour we paddled back to the boat ramp and just as we were hauling out, an official looking boat with several uniformed men disembarked along side us. My first question was where to find a navigation map and they suggested checking at the dam site administrative offices. One civilian person on the boat then came over to us and introduced himself as Richard Bennett, a fellow kayaker who was at that point half way on his journey following the Lewis and Clark trail from St. Louis, MO to the Pacific Ocean. He had left there on April 8th and expected to be at the Pacific Ocean some time in October. We had a lengthy chat and invited him back to the nearby tavern for a beer and conversation. This was a very propitious moment for us, and certainly a confluence of like spirits.

We left there very excited at having met Richard and continued our journey, leaving him to be transported by truck to the town of Glasgow by his new Ranger friends. Here he was scheduled to pick up supplies, which had been mailed to him. We headed west through Glasgow, Malta and Havre (pronounced Haver) where, after a 20 mile round trip trying to find a campground we checked in a Budget Motel in Havre. Here we took a well-deserved shower and had a good night's rest.
