The two guys who had walked with Sam were just a few yards up the beach and I could see that they had already caught a sturgeon, which was tethered in the shallows. I had not seen a wild sturgeon before and I wondered what the rules were on taking them. I subsequently found out that they are plentiful and taken often, based on maturity.

I pushed off again, this time into the Willamette. The sky was leaden gray and the wind and water calm and flat. I turned and waved at Sam then paddled along the east and inside curve where many large container vessels were moored. My trek up the Willamette was under way.
